 Kernel Pre-treatment Section

The pretreatment section greatly affect the oil extraction efficiency and production cost. Before feeding into oil expeller (oil press), the palm kernels must be cleaning to remove impurities, otherwise they may damage the expeller, increase maintenance costs and reduce the quality of final oil product.

• Magnetic separator is used to remove metal debris;
• Vibrating screen is used to remove stones and sand;
• Break roller or winging hammer grinder is used to break the palm kernels into small pieces.
• Flaking machine is used to pressing the kernel fragments into flakes (0.25 to 0.4 mm thick).
• Cooker is used to adjust the moisture content of the palm kernel flakers to optimum level through steam conditioning. Besides, cooking process can also help reducing viscosity of oil, rupturing cell walls, coagulating the protein and facilitating separation of oil from protein materials. In the palm kernel oil pressing process, the meals are generally cooked to a moisture content of 3 % at 104-110°C.

 Screw-pressing Section

Oil expeller or screw press is the standard oil processing machine in the modern oil milling industry worldwide.

After properly pretreatment, the meal is then fed into palm kernel oil press (screw press), which is mainly composed of a revolving worm and a stationary perforated cylinder called barrel or cage. With the worm revolving, the meal is forced through the cage. The volume axially displaced by the worm diminishes from the feeding end to the discharge end, thus compressing the meal as it passes through the barrel. While the palm kernel expeller or cake is discharged from an annular orifice, the expelled oil will flow out from the barrel of screw oil press. For cold oil pressing process, a circulating water system is added to cool the worm-shaft and manufacturer high quality cold pressing oil product.

 Oil Clarification Section

The expelled oil discharged from the palm kernel oil press is then drained to a reservoir. The crude palm kernel oil inevitably contains unwanted impurities and foots, which must be removed to produce clear oil prior to storage.

• Revolving coarse screen or decanter is used to remove large solid impurities;
• Filter press is used to remove the remaining solids and fines;

What output of palm oil mill do I need?

For most first-time palm oil mill businessmen, they have no idea about yield. So here we offer a way to caculate the production output you might need for your business plan. Palm oil is made from palm fruit or palm kernel. But whatever you want to make, the following calculation methods are all applicable.

There are about 140 palm trees planted per hectare land, and about 20 tons fresh fruits can be produced per tree per year.
In most cases, 12.5% of orchard output are defined as the maximum palm fruit consumption each month.
The producing time should be caculated according to 25 days each month and 20 hours one day.
Example: With 2000 hectares plantation, the production output of palm oil mill you need to build is:
2000 x 20 x 12.5% / 25 / 20 = 10 ton/hour

After palm oil pressing process, solids parts (mixtures of palm fibre and nuts) will be discharged out of the screw press. In palm kernel recovery plant, the nuts and fibre will be separated by physical method. The fibre are burned in steam boiler as biomass fuel. The super-heated steam is then used to drive turbines to generate electricity for the to the complete palm oil extraction plant. The nuts are send to crushing system to remove the shell. Palm kernel is another by-product of palm oil mill, which can be further processed in palm kernel processing plant to extract palm kernel oil, while the shells are sold as fuel to other industries.

Palm Kernel Recovery System

After palm oil extraction, the nuts and fiber are recovered from the mash. The mixture of nut and fiber is dried first and then separated from each other in depericarper (nut & fibre separator). As fibers is light in weight, they are carried away by air flow, while nuts are fall into a rotary drum. The separated fibers are used in the boiler as fuel. The nuts are sent to nut silo. By use of cracking machinery, the palm kernel will be recovered from the nuts. The nut shells are collected and feed into boiler with fiber. The kernels are further processed in palm kernel oil extraction plant to produce palm kernel oil (PKO) and palm kernel cake (PKC).

The rate of FFA increase is much faster in broken kernels. So try to keep the kernel breakage as low as possible during the nut crushing processes.
